200 Years of Loving Watercress

9th March 2008

Watercress Book

In celebration of the British watercress industry’s 200th anniversary, The Watercress Alliance has produced a delightful hardback book, packed with over 30 delicious recipes, history, folklore and health facts on the nation’s most historic salad leaf. The book includes five exclusive recipes and a foreword by celebrity chef and watercress super-fan - Antony Worrall Thompson: “Watercress is a fantastic salad leaf.  Its lush, plump, vibrant leaves not only taste wonderfully peppery and crisp, but are amazingly good for us too, literally brimming with vitamins and minerals,” says Antony.

Discover the rich culinary heritage of this natural superfood, which has long been an integral ingredient in the British diet. For instance, did you know the herbalist John Gerard said it could help prevent scurvy? The 17th Century herbalist Culpepper claimed “watercress potage is a good remedy to cleanse the blood in spring and consume the gross humours winter hath left behind,” while Anglo Saxons thought it could prevent baldness!

Pick your copy up on The Watercress Alliance stand for the exclusive festival price of just £5 (normal price £6.99 from watercress.co.uk and amazon.co.uk). For more information on the bicentenary celebrations and the watercress book, visit http://www.watercress.co.uk/.
